Postnatal Visits in Miami, FL
What are Postnatal Visits?
Postnatal references the period of time after childbirth. After a mother gives birth, her body experiences a number of changes, including the added stress of having a baby. Many mothers are diligent about their prenatal exams, ensuring the healthy growth and development of their baby. However, some new moms may put off a postnatal visit as it is a busy time of transition. Also known as a postpartum checkup, this visit is simply a medical checkup you get after having a baby to make sure you’re recovering well from labor and birth. It is a very important part of your journey, and gives you the proper information you need to move forward as a new mother.

When Do I Have a Postnatal Visit?
A postnatal visit is usually scheduled no later than 12 weeks after giving birth, most commonly between three and six weeks.
This will give your body some time to adjust and heal, and your provider can see if there are any areas of concern.
What is Discussed at a Postnatal Visit?
You can expect to check in with your provider or OB/GYN after your delivery to discuss:
- Potential complications from childbirth
- Addressing any unexpected issues that came up including emergency C-section or last-minute decisions
- Proper aftercare
- A discussion about breastfeeding and how your body is adapting
- Mental health issues and postpartum depression
- Sexual function and birth control
- Possible health concerns
- Overall progress for both you and your baby
What Happens at a Postnatal Visit?
Your postpartum visit can be very similar to your yearly gynecological exam, so it might include:
- Taking regular measurements for blood pressure, weight, and heart rate
- A pelvic exam to make sure your body is returning to its normal state
- Checking your thyroid and assessing your hormone levels
- Addressing any concerns like bleeding, incontinence, hemorrhoids, or constipation
- Reviewing your mental health and screening for postpartum depression
- Answering any questions you may have regarding sexual activity or birth control methods
The appointment is a great time to talk with your doctor about your childbirth experience and make sure you feel capable and confident moving forward. It can range in length, depending on your needs.
Can I Bring My New Baby to a Post Postnatal Visit?
It can be difficult to find time for a doctor’s visit when you have a newborn baby at home. Check with your provider to see if you can bring your new baby in with you for your six-week appointment. Usually, it is not an issue and the appointment is rather short. However, if you are concerned about illness and exposure, you may ask a family member or friend to watch the baby for the short time you are away.
Your provider’s office is very understanding of children, babies, and the challenges new mothers face. Talk to the office to see if there is a time or arrangement that works best for you.
